One of my favorite pieces of music during this season is “Love Came Down at Christmas.” It originally appeared as a poem written by Christina Rossetti in 1885 and was published untitled in Time Flies: A Reading Diary. In 1893 it was included in a collection, Verses, and here it was titled “Christmastide.”
Many composers over the years have set these lovely words to music and now the poem is often sung as a Christmas carol. My favorite version is the one linked below and performed by Polyphony and City of London Sinfonia. John Rutter arranged the music and Stephen Layton directs the choir.
I hope you’ll enjoy this gift of music as we await the arrival of the Christ Child in our lives and homes.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza, and however you greet
one another during what we call Christmas!
