Our pastor never ceases to amaze. Not only does she wear multiple hats — pastor, wife, mother, grandmother, visitor, teacher, scholar, facilitator and more — she comes up with unique sermon topics almost every Sunday of the year. This Sunday, yesterday, was no exception.
I listened as Mary shared her sermon message with the children during their time with her. I sensed an awesome message on its way.
How do you know to follow Jesus? Small hands flew into the air. Because your parents do, the Bible says we should, it’s the right thing to do.
Can you see Jesus when He walks into our church? No.
How do you know He is here? Because you can feel Him.
And that’s enough to follow Jesus? Yep. Enough.
Once the children are on their way to Sunday School, Mary begins with affirming that children trust much more easily than do we adults. Yes, I think to myself. That’s pretty much a given.
How easy is it for you to follow the Light? Complete silence unlike during the children’s message. Adults are reluctant to speak aloud during worship.
What if I tell you there’s more? More what? What is she talking about?
More, more of the Kingdom to experience. Simple as that — more of the Kingdom to experience. I’ve always believed in the Kingdom here on earth and in Heaven, slightly different of course. But what does she mean?
The Kingdom of God is wherever Jesus is. Interesting concept.
Without a hint of frustration that we are sitting as dullards before her, she moves on with the message God has given her to impart.
Think about it. When times get tough or it seems you’ve gone as far in one direction as you can go, the Kingdom comes near and allows us to go in a different direction. And this happens by Jesus calling us to look toward the Light and see where the Light is. He invites us to move in the direction of change, of living life in a new way, to come and see.
We are a restless people, hungry and longing. We can be made calm, filled and at peace in one simple choice.
Follow the Light — there’s more!
And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter,
and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee,
and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
~ Matthew 4:18-22 (NKJV)
What about you? How easy is it for you to follow the Light?
